A mosaic in the Hagia Sophia
This icon is a mosaic, depicting the image of Jesus Christ. It is to be seen in the Hagia Sophia, a Greek Orthodox patriarchal basilica, founded in 537. The Cathedral and its mosaics were at risk of being totally destroyed in 1453, when the Muslim Ottoman turks conquerred Constantinople, up till then the seat of the East Roman Byzantine Emperors. The cathedral Hagia Sophia was then converted into a mosque. In 1935 it was however secularized and altered into a museum. Constantinople had by then (in 1930) changed name into Istambul, Turkey.
